OpenAI DevDay 2026: the chatbot is quietly disappearing

OpenAI announced a small mountain of things at DevDay. But I think most of them point in roughly the same direction: AI is moving from something you visit to something that hangs around.

OpenAI held DevDay this week and, as is now customary in AI, announced enough products to make anything written about the company 48 hours earlier feel vaguely prehistoric.

The headline is Dots. A Dot is essentially a persistent AI agent powered by GPT-6 Astra. You can talk to it, give it ongoing jobs and connect it to the places where your life or work actually happens. Crucially, it gets its own cloud computer and can keep working when you're not sitting in front of ChatGPT. It can delegate work into tools such as Codex and ChatGPT Work and come back with the results. OpenAI

This is another step in what I see as a general shift from "I have a question → I open ChatGPT → I ask it → it responds" towards having an always-on AI participant in your life: something persistent that knows what you're working on, has access to the appropriate tools and can act without requiring you to initiate every interaction.

In other words, the prompt starts to disappear.

That gets much more interesting alongside some of the less flashy announcements. Plugins are being pushed again, giving ChatGPT deeper access to external tools. MCP Events can cause automations to start when something happens elsewhere. ChatGPT Space gives humans and agents a shared workspace containing documents and project context. And Sign in with ChatGPT begins turning your ChatGPT account into something you can carry into other software. OpenAI Developer Community

Put those together and you can see what OpenAI appears to be building: not a better chatbot, but an AI operating layer.

There was plenty of raw horsepower too. GPT-6.1 Sol gets close to Astra's performance on coding, computer use and professional work while costing one-fifth as much at standard API token prices. There's also an Ultrafast tier capable of running Astra up to eight times faster in Codex, plus a new $500-a-month Pro 500 plan for people who have a lot of money. OpenAI

But Dots at least is quite interesting. I am going to write a blog on AI FOMO when I find the time (i.e. I get 5 hours of GPT Work per day.... I mean I GOTTA use it right?? it could be building something!). Dots feels like the closest thing to being able to do that quite seamlessly.

And perhaps that's the real significance of DevDay 2026. The last few years have been about making AI smarter. The next phase looks increasingly like making it a persistent, connected presence in everyone's lives. I know we're not quite there yet but why wouldn't you want a genuinely capable, adaptable digital worker that could constantly help you out while you go do the things you enjoy? 😃
